Introduction:
Each year The Child and Family Institute offers post-doctoral fellowship positions for candidates who are interested in extending their knowledge and experience in the practice of clinical work with urban children, adolescents and families. All of our fellowships offer a full range of training experiences in clinical work with an ethnically and socio-economically diverse population of urban children, adolescents and families. Fellows provide individual, group; dyadic and family therapy; crisis services; diagnostic interviews; neuropsychological assessment; and home, school and community-based interventions. The implementation of empirically validated strategies is emphasized. All fellows have the opportunity to develop supervisory skills and will participate in advanced courses on supervision and psychotherapy.

The post-doctoral fellowship training program in psychology at the Child and Family Institute is made up of the following tracks:

Parent-Infant Treatment/Community Psychology:
The fellowship in our Parent-Infant Center (PIC) is an opportunity for two trainees to spend approximately half their time focusing on assessment, intervention strategies, program development and research as related to work with at-risk caregivers and their babies, ages 0 to 3. Under the supervision of Dr. Wendie Klapper, a specialist in early childhood development, the fellows will co-lead groups and carry dyadic cases with the goal of facilitating the establishment of healthy attachment relationships between caregivers and their young children.

Testing and Assessment/Community Psychology:
The fellowship in Testing and Assessment will allow one trainee to focus intensively on the development of skills in neuropsychological testing and assessment with infants, latency age children and adolescents who present with learning difficulties and developmental delays. The Testing and Assessment fellow will spend approximately half their time administering evaluations, analyzing results, writing reports and assisting in the teaching of a course in neuropsychological assessment. The fellows will work closely with Dr. Nelson Dorta, a pediatric neuropsychologist who will provide mentoring and individual supervision.

The other half of the fellow's clinical time for all of these positions (Parent-Infant Center track and Testing and Assessment track) will be spent working in the general OPD and in the community with latency age children, adolescents and families in satellite clinics in local elementary, middle and high schools and foster care agencies. They will also attend weekly didactic sessions, Grand Rounds, and a variety of individual and group supervision sessions.

Community Psychology:
In this fellowship position one trainee is based at CFI’s general outpatient child and adolescent psychiatry clinic. One or two days per week are spent at a school or agency-based Child and Family Clinic Plus satellite clinic. This is primarily a clinical opportunity (e.g., intakes, individual, group and family therapy) that includes the possibility of supervising an extern and tailoring some experiences to the trainees’ particular interests. Four child clinical psychologists will provide supervision on cases and trainees will attend didactic courses.

Pediatric Neuropsychology Fellowship:
This is a two-year specialty fellowship in pediatric neuropsychology coordinated through Child Psychiatry. This fellowship is offered on alternate years. The fellow's primary rotations for this position include assessment, treatment, planning, and consultation to the following services:

1. General outpatient child and adolescent clinic-primary referrals concern learning, developmental, and attention disorder differential diagnosis.
2. Epilepsy Service - Both inpatient and outpatient assessment for this population.
3. Adolescent Day Hospital - Assessment of adolescent patients with serious psychiatric and substance abuse concerns with co-occurring learning issues.
4. Pediatric Medicine - Assessment and consultation to inpatient and outpatient pediatric services in the hospital.

This is a primarily a clinical position with the possibility of some research time allocated in the 2nd year. A pediatric neuropsychologist provides supervision and a year long didactic course in pediatric neuropsychology will be offered. The fellow will also be encouraged and supported to attend continuing education opportunities in New York City and elsewhere.

Stipend and Benefits:
The stipend for the post-doctoral fellowships is currently $30,000. Future stipends will not be less than this amount. Post-doctoral fellows are entitled to full health insurance benefits for themselves and their families. They receive four weeks of paid vacation, four personal days, twelve sick days and three conference days.
