Beth Israel has made major investments in laboratory automation. Our robotic Total Laboratory Automation (TLA) system was the first system in a United States hospital to completely automate processing, testing, re-testing, and storage of laboratory specimens. This technology allows us to perform high throughput random access testing at a very competitive cost. In surgical pathology we use an automated speech recognition system based on Kurzweil artificial intelligence for the direct dictation of routine diagnostic pathology consultations. This innovative approach to surgical pathology has been recognized by the Smithsonian Institute for its technological achievement.
