Beth Israel’s Executive Health Program consists of a comprehensive medical package, with several menu options you can choose from.

Appointments are preferably scheduled at least two weeks in advance. You will be asked to fill out a patient history questionnaire prior to your appointment, which will be reviewed by one of our physicians, so appropriate testing can be ordered. Blood tests will be drawn a week ahead of an appointment, whenever possible.

Comprehensive History and Physical
When you come to the Executive Health Program, a physician will review your past and present health issues, family history and any symptoms you may have. He or she will perform a complete physical examination, including height, weight, body mass index, blood pressure, pulse, heart and lung functions, eye exam and depression screening. The physician also will address nutrition, exercise, smoking cessation and other health maintenance topics.

Laboratory tests include the following:

• CBC—white and red blood cell and platelet count.
  
  
• Liver, kidney and metabolic profile
  
  
• Coronary risk profile, including total cholesterol—HDL-C (“good” cholesterol), LDL-C (“bad” cholesterol), triglycerides and sensitive C-reactive protein.
  
  
• Urinalysis for the presence of glucose, blood or infection
  
  
• Hemoccult stool test for gastrointestinal bleeding due to tumors, ulcers, or polyps.
  
  
• Thyroid blood test for thyroid disorders
  
  
• Rapid plasma reagin blood test for syphilis
  
  
• Electrocardiogram (EKG) to detect electrical activity problems in the heart
  
  
• Spirometry/pulmonary function tests to measure lung function
  
  
• For Men over 45—Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test for prostate cancer
  
  
• For Women—PAP test for cervical cancer

We recommend a non-invasive 64-slice CT-calcium score for men over 35 and women over 40, who have the following risk factors:

• High cholesterol
  
  
• High LDL-C (bad cholesterol)
  
  
• Family history of heart disease
  
  
• High blood pressure
  
  
• Obesity
  
  
• Diabetes
  
  
• Use tobacco

 

A 64-slice CT scan builds precise, 3-D images of the heart’s muscle and arteries to uncover problems, such as clogged arteries. If the scan indicates it, a consultation with a Beth Israel cardiologist will follow, with emphasis on preventive ways to cut coronary risk factors.

Additional Imaging and Diagnostic Testing
In addition to the basic tests, the Executive Health Program makes available sophisticated and state-of-the-art imaging and diagnostic techniques to further evaluate health risks. They include:

• Expanded Coronary Risk/Vertical Auto Profile (VAP)—This more in-depth cholesterol study provides valuable information on hidden heart risks, including inherited factors that can lead to premature heart disease. It identifies more than 90 percent of people at risk for cardiovascular disease, compared to 40 percent for routine cholesterol screenings.
  
  
• HIV testing and counseling
  
  
• Mammograms and ovarian cancer testing for women over 40.
  
  
• More sensitive chest CT scans for lung cancer.
  
  
• Nuclear stress tests for uncovering obstructive coronary artery disease
  
  
• Carotid artery ultrasound and/or peripheral artery Doppler to accurately detect narrowing or blocked blood vessels
  
  
• Bone density scans for osteoporosis.
  
  
• Major organ and total body CT scans
  
  
• Virtual or optical colonoscopies for colorectal cancers. (Optical colonoscopies may require a prolonged stay because of intravenous sedation. A chaperone also should accompany a patient home after the procedure.)
  
  
• Upper endoscopy for reflux disease (this procedure also requires intravenous sedation and a chaperone to accompany a patient home after the procedure.)
  
  
• Hepatitis B and C screening tests for chronic liver infections

Health and Wellness
Our Health and Wellness options aim to keep you “in the pink” with common sense approaches to wellness.

You can schedule a nutrition consultation with a registered dietitian, who will provide a complete nutrition assessment and diet plan that meets your specific needs, establishing goals for weight management and nutrition intake. The dietitian can provide guidelines for healthy eating when dining out or when traveling on business.

You also can consult with an exercise trainer, who will evaluate your flexibility, muscle strength and cardio-pulmonary fitness. He or she will design a specific exercise plan that is just right for you.

Additionally, our psychiatrists and psychologists can help you resolve difficult life problems and conflicts, make better decisions, develop improved interpersonal relationships, improve everyday functioning and reduce stress through a number of behavioral techniques, such as relaxation therapy, deep breathing and cognitive restructuring. They can provide diagnostic evaluations on drug and alcohol problems, along with various treatment approaches.
