Core measures, established by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in 2002, gauge a hospital’s performance in following national standards of care—that is, specific steps for prevention or treatment—for distinct conditions. These standards are based on evidence and research and have been shown to get the best results for patients. Here we report on acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, pneumonia, surgical infection, patient falls with injury, and hospital-acquired infection rate: colon.
