 Beth
Israel Medical Center and The New York Eye & Ear Infirmary are among
those hospitals listed in the 2010 U.S. News & World Report’s “Best
Hospitals” annual survey. Under the specialty of “Ear, Nose and Throat,”
NYEE ranks 41st and Beth Israel ranks 45th, and under the specialty
of Ophthalmology, NYEE ranks 13th.
- Continuum Health Partners was named one of the nation's "Top 100
Most Wired Hospitals" by "Hospitals and Health Networks" for the third
year in a row.
- Beth Israel received a 2010 HANYS Pinnacle Award for Quality and
Patient Safety for its program to prevent catheter-associated urinary

a 2009 HANYS Pinnacle Award for Quality and Patient Safety for successfully
reducing hospital-acquired infections, specifically methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus Aureaus (MRSA) infections.
- Beth Israel was chosen as one of seven nonprofit health organizations
to share in more than $1.2 million in funding from the New York State
Department of Health for demonstration projects focusing on the prevention
of infections acquired in hospitals.
- Beth Israel was declared a premium specialty center and awarded three
stars by United HealthCare for its spine surgery and total joint replacement
programs. The designation means that BI meets or exceeds nationally
recognized standards of care for these two specialties.
- Beth Israel was recognized by the American Heart Association and
American Stroke Association for its treatment of cardiac and stroke
patients by using the “Get with the Guidelines” Program, a hospital-based
quality improvement program designed to ensure that hospitals consistently
care for cardiac and stroke patients following the most up-to-date guidelines
and recommendations.
- The Department of Pain Medicine and Palliative Care at Beth Israel
Medical Center was named 2009 Center of Excellence Award Winner by the
American Pain Society.
- Beth Israel has been selected by the Institute of Healthcare Improvement
as one of the first “mentor hospitals” for a new infection prevention
initiative, which will focus on reducing Foley catheter-associated urinary
tract infections.
- Beth Israel, for the second year in a row, has earned “Quality Respiratory
Recognition” under a national American Association for Respiratory Care
program that helps patients and families make informed decisions about
the quality of respiratory care services available in hospitals.
Beth Israel’s 1199 infection prevention coaches received an award for
their efforts to improve hand hygiene and the environment of care, and
reduce infections at the Petrie and Kings Highway Division at the recent
1199 Quality and Service Conference in Manhattan.
- Beth Israel was awarded 2008 Empire Clinical Research Investigator
Program grants from the New York State Department of Health. The two-year
grants total $150,000. The funds are being used for studies on diabetes,
bone metabolism and magnetic resonance imaging.
- St. Luke's and Roosevelt Hospitals were awarded 2008 Empire Clinical
Research Investigator Program grants from the New York State Department
of Health. The two-year grants total $150,000. The monies are being
used to improve patient safety and do research into coronary disease.
- St. Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospitals’ HIV Center for Comprehensive
Care has received the American Psychiatric Association’s 2009 award
for advancing minority mental health care.
- St. Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospitals were designated as New York City
Hospitals for Bariatric Surgery for obesity by the New York State Department
of Health. In addition, SLR is an American College of Surgeons Center
of Excellence for obesity surgery.
- The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospitals
was recognized by New York State’s Hospital-Acquired Infection Reporting
Program as having the lowest rate of neonatal infections in New York
State.
- St. Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospitals were among seven nonprofit health
organizations chosen to share in more than $1.2 million in funding from

Fall Reduction in Beth Israel Rehabilitation Nursing
The team successfully reduced fall rates by collecting information from
patients prior to admission to identify individuals patient needs. They
subsequently developed individual plans for patients including room placement
and periodically re-evaluation. In addition, they educated staff members,
patients and family members about safety precautions.

Neonatal Order Set Implementation
The team successfully reduced neonatal-related prescribing medication
errors by creating a standard ordering format for neonatal orders, separate
from adult order sets.

Yvonne Sorensson, RN, MA, and a team of neonatologists, nurses, pharmacists
and information technology staff.

Prevention of C. difficile Infections Across Continuum Health Partners
The team successfully developed a strategy to interrupt the transmission
and prevent the occurrence of hospital-acquired Clostidium difficile
infections (CDI).
