The Asthma Center

The Asthma Center at Long Island College Hospital (LICH) is a multidisciplinary service providing state-of-the-art clinical care, education and prevention strategies for asthmatic patients and their families. Our board-certified physicians are recognized experts in the areas of allergy and immunology, pediatrics and pulmonary medicine. They have a proven track record of success in the management of asthma from the mildest to the most severe cases. The Asthma Center at LICH is organized so that you will have one point person who will arrange all of your tests and appointments, an asthma registry that identifies and tracks your medical histories and round-the-clock access to an asthma specialist.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

LICH's Asthma Center provides a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for asthma care. Our staff is specially trained to make your visit a positive experience. In addition, you will receive detailed education materials on how to effectively manage your asthma. We make every effort to answer all of your questions so that you will feel completely confident about managing your asthma at home, work or school. When necessary, Asthma Center physicians
Robert Giusti, MD, Arlene T. Schneider, MD and Peter R. Smith, MD can call upon consultants from the LICH community who represent all of the major medical and surgical subspecialties such as ear, nose and throat, infectious disease and gastrointestinal disease.

The Asthma Center at LICH bases its approach to asthma care on guidelines developed by the National Institutes of Health. Through application of the most advanced techniques, our goal is the elimination of asthma symptoms, restoration of normal lung function and maintenance of a healthy and full lifestyle. We emphasize a partnering relationship with our patients so that they become educated and confident in self-management. Our education program includes group sessions for patients and families. It also extends to the community in the form of lectures and discussions held at the center and at other locations in our neighborhood.

Our facilities for the treatment of acute severe asthma include a recently-renovated Emergency Department, a dedicated Respiratory Care Unit and a world-class Intensive Care Unit. The staff in these areas are trained to provide the most advanced asthma care and education.

In addition to expert clinical care and extensive educational programs, the Asthma Center team is committed to helping people with asthma through research and exploring new approaches to prevention and treatment. Our faculty regularly reports the results of their research in leading medical journals and at local, national and international medical conferences.

Located in the historic Brooklyn Heights/ Cobble Hill section of Brooklyn, the Long Island College Hospital is a 516-bed teaching hospital dedicated to compassionate, community-centered care.
