The Cancer Center at Beth Israel
Our Cancer Center combines state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment in a friendly, supportive, and caring environment. Beth Israel is a major provider of cancer services in the New York metropolitan area, caring for more than 2,000 cancer patients annually. The Cancer Center offers the services of the finest physicians treating all forms of cancer. To ensure optimal care throughout the course of treatment, the center provides a range of supportive services, from pain and symptom management to education and wellness programs, all in a single facility. Appel-Venet Comprehensive Breast Service
The Appel-Venet Comprehensive Breast Service employs an interdisciplinary approach to provide expert diagnosis, treatment, and support to women with breast cancer. A team of radiologists, surgeons, pathologists, medical oncologists, plastic surgeons, nurses, social workers, psychiatrists, support groups, nutritionists, genetic counselor and other health care professionals work collaboratively to deliver individual treatment plans to every patient with breast cancer. Led by Susan Boolbol, MD, the Appel-Venet Comprehensive Breast Service offers state-of-the-art techniques to diagnose breast cancer and minimally invasive treatment programs. Care is provided in a supportive, patient-centered environment that addresses our patients’ emotional, as well as physical needs. Department of Pain Medicine and Palliative Care
Founded in 1997, the department has become a center of excellence and a national model for clinical, educational, and research programs in pain medicine and palliative care. Under the leadership of Russell K. Portenoy, MD, our nationally renowned staff provides direct services to patients and their caregivers, hosts educational programs for health care professionals and the public, and conducts state-of-the art research that advances treatment and quality of life for people with chronic, advanced, and incurable illness. Spine Institute
The Spine Institute is one of the first programs of its kind in New York City to combine all diagnostic and treatment services for back pain and spinal disorders under one roof. Under the leadership of Michael G. Neuwirth, MD, the Spine Institute features a talented multidisciplinary team of health professionals from orthopedics, physiatry (rehabilitation medicine), neurology, anesthesiology, physical and occupational therapy, and psychology, using the latest medical advances and technology. Comprehensive Pediatric Epilepsy Program
Beth Israel’s Comprehensive Pediatric Epilepsy Program, operating under the leadership of Steven M. Wolf, MD and Patricia McGoldrick, NP, features a five-bed pediatric intensive care unit for surgical patients, and a six-bed inpatient epilepsy monitoring unit. Both units are staffed by attending pediatricians, intensive care specialists, nurse practitioners, family practice residents and neurology- and neurosurgery-trained nurses.
A full Child Life program is in place for all pediatric epilepsy patients. Facilities include a 24-hour-a-day family lounge equipped with Internet access, television, books, cooking facilities and comfortable furniture; a playroom equipped with crafts, games, books, movies, toys and two video EEG hook-ups; and wireless Internet. The unit’s Child Life staff and music therapists are available to comfort and play with the children.

Phillips Beth Israel School of Nursing
Since its founding in 1904, The Phillips Beth Israel School of Nursing has been a leader in professional nursing education. The School provides outstanding academic and clinical experiences that enable students to obtain their Associate in Applied Science degree and be eligible for licensure as registered professional nurses. The mission is to graduate nurses who will provide high quality, culturally sensitive, and compassionate care in diverse acute and community settings. Kings Highway Division
Beth Israel’s Kings Highway Division provides outstanding medical and surgical services for thousands of patients in Brooklyn each year. The Kings Highway Division is in the midst of a major renovation program to modernize the facility, expand services, and address important community needs. We are building a state-of-the-art cardiac care unit, further developing the department of surgery, redesigning the gastrointestinal endoscopy unit, renovating the main lobby and patient rooms, building a new admitting department, and strengthening community health education programs. The Louis Armstrong Center for Music and Medicine
The Louis Armstrong Center for Music and Medicine is at the national forefront of providing music therapy to complement medical treatment. The Center has outpatient programs including services for children and teens with asthma, adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cardiovascular disease and also for musicians and performing artists. Since 1994, music therapy has been an integral service for inpatient programs at Beth Israel Medical Center including pediatrics, neonatal intensive care, maternity, HIV/AIDS, family medicine, pain and palliative care, oncology, spine injuries and emergency and intensive care. Under the leadership of music therapist Dr. Joanne Loewy MT-BC, the Center is comprised of an interdisciplinary team of healthcare professionals including music therapists who are trained to offer the most current music psychotherapy techniques in pain management, sedation, end-of-life, wellness and breathing modalities of music and healing. The Center conducts cutting-edge research to support clinical practice, including clinical trials on music therapy with children and teens with asthma and with adults in cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation. The Bipolar Family Treatment Center
The Bipolar Family Treatment Center is dedicated to the compassionate support, treatment and understanding of bipolar illness within the context of the family. Recognizing that preserving family health and stability is an essential part of successful bipolar illness treatment, the Center's clinical program is unique in that it is the first ever to systematically focus on including caregivers and family members at every step along the patient's way to wellness. Under the direction of founder Igor Galynker, MD, PhD, the program is designed to both improve patients' outcome and quality of life, and also protect family members - including children - from the pain, frustration, isolation, and misunderstanding that are associated with dealing with a family member's bipolar illness. Sol and Margaret Berger Department of Urology
The Sol and Margaret Berger Department of Urology, led by Chairman Harris M. Nagler, MD, offers comprehensive care to men and women for all urologic conditions. Our staff consists of board-certified, fellowship trained urologists who have expertise in general urologic care, female urology, kidney and urinary tract disease, kidney stones, urinary incontinence, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), urologic cancers (prostate, bladder, testicular, kidney, adrenal), vasectomy reversal, male infertility, varicoceles and sexual dysfunction. Our staff also includes a board-certified pediatric urologist dedicated to providing exceptional pediatric urology care to infants, children and adolescents. Funding is presently being sought for the establishment of a clinically based Urologic Institute that will serve as the national model for research into new urological treatments, detection strategies and prevention efforts.Donate Now

Department of Ophtalmology
The Department of Ophthalmology provides high-quality eye care to patients of all ages, ranging from routine eye exams to the treatment of complex ophthalmologic conditions. Led by Chairman Jay Wisnicki, MD, the Department now consists of seven full time ophthalmologists who see upwards of 19,000 patient visits per year, with the bulk of its work focused on offering pediatric eye care, glaucoma management and comprehensive eye care in adults. We also have experts in glaucoma management, cataract surgery, plastic eye surgery, laser vision corrective surgery, retina treatment, cornea treatment and the medical and surgical treatment of strabismus (“cross-eyes”). The Marilyn Brodoff Memorial Fund
Cancer patients and sick children at Beth Israel can find peace and quiet, along with reading materials and entertainment, in dedicated rooms that are furnished and maintained by a friend of the hospital who lost his wife of 43-years to cancer. At Marilyn's Place at PACC, cancer patients can relax in a comfortable and home-like environment, with books, music, TV, and movies at their fingertips. At Marilyn's Place for Kids in the pediatric unit, sick children and those with neurological disorders like epilepsy, have access to laptops, video games, CD players, crib toys, and teddy bears to help make their hospital stay a little less distressing.Donate Now
